What type of instruction yields success?

  • An Orton-Gillingham program, also referred to as a Multi-sensory Structured Literacy program
    • Teaches phonemic (sound) awareness directly & explicitly
    • Teaches by sounding out
    • Teaches reading and spelling rules, sequentially, from simplest to most complex
    • Teaches using multiple senses : visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic
    • Teaching is direct, systematic, and sequential
    • Examples are: the original Orton-Gillingham method, Barton Reading & Spelling System, Wilson Reading, Logic of English, and others
  • Intense tutoring:
    • Means one-to-one tutoring, minimum two hours per week with no more than 1 hour per session
    • More sessions per week can yield faster results

Who can be tutored using Barton Reading & Spelling system?

  • a student at least 5 years old
  • a student with at least a second grade understanding of English – this is NOT an ESL program
  • a student who has difficulty reading and especially with spelling, even common everyday “sight” words (was, of, very, who, what, how)
  • a student who may or may not have been identified as dyslexic yet
  • a student who can pass an auditory discrimination screener, which can be viewed at https://bartonreading.com/

How long will tutoring last?

  • A commitment to a minimum of two tutor sessions per week
  • A commitment to at least one year of tutoring
    • Completing all of the Barton Reading & Spelling system varies by student but will likely take several years

What are the tutoring options?

Remote Tutoring:

  • Currently, due to COVID19, this is the best option
  • Remote tutoring takes place over Zoom, utilizing the Whizzimo Barton Application
    • This application retains the multi-sensory aspect as well as all of the Barton Lessons
  • Remote tutoring requires:
    • a computer desktop or laptop with camera, microphone, headset (possibly)
    • a computer mouse
    • a reliable Internet connection

In Person Tutoring:

  • Contact for availability due to COVID19

What about cost?

  • Hourly rates are comparable with local private tutoring costs in the Tarrant County, TX area
